The United States Constitution provides every individual the freedom and right to own property in their own name. The Office of the Recorder protects that freedom by permanently recording all original documents pertaining to property ownership and real property transactions within Rock Island County. These recordings establish and provide the official court record for title and ownership to Rock Island County property.
Among the documents maintained within the Recorder's office are deeds, mortgages, corporation papers, liens, veteran's discharge papers, plats and instruments pertaining to the Uniform Commercial Code. All records are recorded according to state statute and Attorney General Opinion. These documents comprise the largest library of permanent property records within our county. Public access to local records is provided by way of books, computers and microfilm.
Many property transactions result in the administration of the Illinois Real Estate Transfer Tax and Rock Island County Real Estate Transfer Tax. These taxes are collected by the Recorder, as well as recording fees which generate revenue for state and county government.
The Recorder is an elected position in all counties in Illinois with a population of more than 60,000.
